I have a hard drive with some very expensive software on it that I don't have anymore, the harddrive came out of a Dell pc and i'm trying to install it in my Gateway pc as a slave. Both pc's were running on the Windows XP system. I was told that Windows XP wouldn't allow me to interchange harddrives. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
I took it to a local computer shop and the tech installed it as a slave but didn't open it up to see if it worked, luckily I opened it before I left his shop and it wouldn't work so he told me to give him a few days with it. Everytime I call he says he 's working on it, or he trying something new. I never dealt with this guy before, so I'm coming to you for your expertise,Thanks

What you need is a 'Hard Drive Enclosure'.
To hell with trying to use your old HD a slave drive. Convert that sucker to where you can access the data from your USB port. I have a 300 GB that I did this way.
I don't think that this 'computer guy' knows what he's doing. If one HD is NTFS and the other FAT32, there's going to be a problem (if he's trying the master/slave bit). Both HD's need to be the same. This doesn't hold true if you use an external HD.
My computer is formatted under NTFS but my external HD is FAT32.
Buy yourself an enclosure, they're not expensive. And tell that guy to cease & desist before he fuc%s up your HD and you lose everything.

well most likely he is working on it so give it a few more days. Then check on it, But to install it correctly, your new hd should come with a cd that has a installation wizard on it, But look in your manual to see how your jumpers are set as slave and master. Make sure these are correct or else it wont work at all. Your jumper is the small black bit that slides over the prongs. hope this helps, if not im sorry :)

Wow - you DO have a problem. Just off the top of my head I would think that transferring files from an infected hard drive will simply reinfect the new drive. Under these circumstances I would defer to the Geek Squad at Best Buy. I know very little about computers but have had a ton of trouble in the past. The Geek Squad has saved me many times. Good luck.

it you don't have the harddrive cable that has the twist in it then you have to set the new drive as the Master (there are some jumpers on the drive to set as Master) and the old drive as slave.
If you do have the harddrive cable that has the twist in it then you have to set both drive to cable select (CS) and the drive the goes thought the twist is the slave.
I have found that CS is usually the default .

Do you know if the BIOS detects the slave drive?
Worse case scenario, you'll have to drop $50 on a HDD enclosure so you can hook it up as a removeable USB device, if for some reason the BIOS won't detect it.
I suppose it could also be possible that the drive itself has gone bad. (Perhaps due to bad handling, or maybe it was dropped)

Whoever told you WinXP doesn't allow interchanging HDs doesn't know what they're on about. I change my secondary HD all the time with no problems. Unfortunately, I dont know what your specific problem is. With mine, I simply open up the case, plug in the drive, boot up and its ready to be used. All I can suggest is to check you BIOS and check the jumper setting of the HD.

Even if you get it to work as a slave you will not be able to run the old programs by just clicking on them. They will have to be reinstalled in order for them to work on the other system.
You need the original installation media!
Have fun but be safe!

I would put it in another(3rd)machine and network them together to get applications you want off from it. I've seen this problem many times with "off-the-shelf" brands. The OS has chipset driver CAB's which make that OS suited only to the particular vendor,Dell,Compaq,Gateway,etc.. :-)=
