Two things: Fear and Love.

Love: Love from your family is expected. Although appreciated at a young age, it's socially worthless. Love from you peers is more socially rewarding. Sort of like a " personal accomplishment " and it fills that primal need to be accepted. You become part of something greater than yourself. A self-worth thing.

Fear: This is where it gets deep. Fear comes in two forms here. Social and Physical.
Social fear is the opposite of what I described above. Being an outsider if you will. the need to feel accepted, and so forth.
Physical fear, this is where it gets bad, so I'll try to keep is simple. There are bad people out there. There are a lot more of them then there are of you. So you band with like minded others to protect yourself and the things/people you love. The unfortunate truth here is that there are people who take advantage of this, and use this situation for "less that honorable" gains.
The third reason that just came to me is as old as gold. Money. Sometimes you have to pay the rent, put food on the table and be a provider. Well, when the jobs that request a social security number aren't hiring, you have few options.

These are the thoughts I have on this, I hope it helps. best wishes.

Their family life obviously isn't very good (or they think it's not very good) so they turn to these thugs for love, not knowing that all they'll get is a ticket to jail. They try to fit in and look cool and tough by breaking the law and ruining their lives.
