And occassionally laundry as well? I have tried switching detergents and adding Febreeze to the wash cycle but it hasn't helped really. Also have tried sponges but they seem to sour as quickly, possibly even faster. Unknowingly picking up a soured rag is just gross!

-All good ideas, thanks everybody but I do the air drying and the bleach but to no avail. Maybe just switch to paper towels, I guess.

Make sure you hang them up after use so they can dry and wash frequently. Once thy go sour pitch them out.

I put my wet dish sponge or rag in the microwave for about 5 seconds and make sure it gets hot, and leave it out to dry and next time it will be just as fresh as when it was new. The heat kills the bacteria that cause the smell.
Whenever your laundry has soured, try washing again with a 1/4 cup of pine-sol and hot water and it will get the smell out.

My first impulse is to tell you that dish cloths should be changed on a daily basis. However, I am aware that most people don't remember to do that. A sponge is never a good idea for any surface that comes in contact with food....they harbor germs and bacteria no matter how well you rinse them out. For quick cleanups I use Chlorox Handiwipes. They come in a tear-out dispensor and have an antibacterial ingredient on them. Each time you do use the cloth, rinse it thoroughly in hot water and hang it to dry. When it's laundry time, put it in with the whites and use a non-chlorine bleach. Hope that helps.

You need to use a clean one each time you wash. Also you could rinse it in a mild bleach solution after each wash if you don't want to use a clean one for each wash. I wash dishes with those green 3-M scrubbers and I don't have a problem with odor. When they wear out I just get a new one. I do rinse it good after each time I do dishes.

Try adding bleach just a very little to the dish washing water, maybe a cap full or so. I have been doing this for years, works great and disinfects the dishes also. Just have to be sure to rinse the dishes very good. good luck hope this is helpful

Soak them in a little bleach and water, then wash in hot water in machine. Any dish cloths that have a persistant smell should be thrown away.

Rinse the dish rag after use and before use in hot water. Discard them everyday. If they get disgusting I throw them out but I have heard that you can soak them in vinegar before you wash them.

rinse the sponges w/cold water as soon as you are done using them...no matter if its to clean up a spill or for washing
hang up all towels and let them air dry...don't use the same towel to dry your hands as you would to dry dishes

beach wash frequently, change them out, dont re use them if soiled.
After use, hang them to dry, then wash. the more rags you have, the better. re use of rag can spred germs that build up in less than 6 hours you can be spreading them instead of cleaning them.
