I was 20 years with a union and granted you do get better pay and benefits but I agree it protects a lot of slackers too, some of whom take REALLY good advantage, but overall when a company wants to bail out they do what these companies do now and just fold up and leave town...or in the case of government they PRIVATIZE and pass the buck of responsibility to the private sector. That is very problematic in my book and why corporations are now running our countries and this world.

This is always a touchy subject, because those with unions definitely have it better. I'd rather work for a unionized company, but you would think a private company would want to keep it's employees happy and well paid which would result in better and happier employees. I think they were established in an era much different from today's world, and it's great that they still exist but it's also part of the reason companies move out and locate where the labour is cheaper. I really think free trade screwed us all over big time.

Good that they look out for the best interest of the members, but sometimes employees who need to be FIRED hide behind the union rules. That's when the union doesn't help everyone because the other employees don't think it's fair.

I agree with you, you get better pay,
1. But when a company wants to bail out the company just leaves town.
2. Or like Kathi says:Good that they look out for the best interest of the members, but sometimes employees who need to be FIRED hide behind the union rules.

I think a company has a responsibility to keep on the right track, that is, be productive, efficient, and profitable. Don't forget stay ahead of the competition. If the company starts loosing market share, it starts loosing customers, and starts becoming unprofitable. It comes to a point when it begins to loose money.
Then the company has to leave, there is nothing the Union can do about it. Economic conditions change all the time.
I think the Union should encourage its members to do their best at work, not just protect their interests. After all, all of us are on the same boat. Thus all of us share a part of the responsibility to keep the operation at the highest standards in order to keep our jobs.

I think there is both good and bad... remember, it was unions that got us a 5 day work week and a 40 hour week... and all sorts of laws to protect the health and well being of workers... however, they tend to also not be very adaptive... when airlines needed to adapt to compete with the "low fare" carriers, the unions would not give up wages or benefits... so... they went broke (and are still going broke).
