You might have used black n' white copy lots of time and you haven't changed it for long. You should go under menu in the printer and see the ink levels. If it is low then you ahve to replace it with a new one. If not re-install you printer in your computer. If non of them works contact your printer manufacture.

Every time you print the computer checks ALL the cartriges in case it needs a colour. If you use only black the colour cartridges will only loose ink on start up when the printer does a clean and prime cycle.
DO NOT run the cartridge out to empty+ or you will have air in the system and need to do a print head clean and check cycle maybe several times to prime it again. You can use an awful lot of ink doing that particularly if you have changed only one cartridge.

If there is not a separate black ink cartridge then anytime you print in black you are really using all the colours to create the black look.

Doesn't matter. Take no notice - the printer manufacturers have this notification appear when the cartridge is half full so you'll buy more unnecessarily. Wait until the colour starts to visibly fade before replacing.

Because your printer will check all installed cartridge levels as part of its power on self test, or whenever you are trying to print in any color.
