Since America is a land mass I would say 48. There are 50 states in the 'United States of America' but only 48 reside on the land mass called 'America'
Of course this not include the Virgin Islands which is only a 'territory' of the US. The US also has Puerto Rico which is a commonwealth but not considered a "state".
