If they are fraternal twins, then it is often easy to tell them apart. My best friend in Middle School had a twin, and I never had a problem telling them apart because my best friend was a boy, and his sister was his twin. Sometimes, however, they may be almost identical in looks though their DNA is actually different. In this case, you'll have difficulty telling them apart, so see some hints in the next paragraph.

Identical twins have the same DNA, but they might have some differences in scars, suntan, haircut, clothing taste, or mannerisms. Maybe one of them is more muscled than the other because they're more athletic, or maybe one is thinner (like the Olsen twins). So you can ask them personally how to tell them apart. If you're making an honest effort to get to know them better, they might just go ahead and tell you.

Finally there's another, rarer kind of twin - the mirror twin. One twin will be the mirror of the other. One twins' internal organs may even be on the opposite side of their body. If they're mirror twins, then you could likely spot that one is left-handed and the other right-handed, or that they part their hair on opposite sides. Up to 25% of twins show some mirroring.

Finally, if they're conjoined twins that are still attached to each other, you might be able to determine which is which by physical location. Fewer than a dozen such twins are living in the United States, so this is quite an unlikely situation to encounter.

Look for moles on their faces. Try to remember which twin has one the right cheek, for example.

Ask them their names!
or....
Make a mark on the wrist, of one of them, with a permanent marker felt pen.
Keep renewing the mark forever.
The name of the one with the mark on his wrist is...
Mark!
