I've had this same situation. As much as I like kids I just think that in some situations and places they are better left at home (even my own son). I usually put on the invitation "Adults only, please", Or "Children above the age of __ only please". That conveys your message without sounding rude. There will still be those that will be offended and not come or bring their children anyway, but it will cut back on the number significantly.
If your not sending invitations and are inviting people over the phone just explain to those that have small children that it is an adults only party (or only children above a certain age are invited) because of the age of the party recipient and most will understand.
Just putting the names of the adults on the invitation the way Anna-Lisa suggested should work in theory, but in practice it doesn't. People asume that if the childrens names aren't on the invitation it is still implied that they are invited (I found that out the hard way lol).

When you send out the invitations make sure you say adults only . That is perfectly socially excepted . I know when I'm 80 I don't want fast little people getting under my feet . Might trip me up . Get a broken hip that way . Not to mention children wast a lot of food . If your paying by the plait for this party that can be expensive . Tell the old gal Happy Birthday and I hope she has at lest 15 more.

On the invitation you just write the names of the people who ARE invited, so no names of the kids! Simple but the message gets there!
