I have an HP laptop and a DELL desktop.
1. If you want service and warranty, go with Dell, HP service and support sucks. HP is going to charge you for customer service after the warranty ends, Dell won't.
2. Notebooks are alot harder to replace items on them so I wold go with Dell because you probably get upgrades on a laptop.
3. Desktops are real easy to replace parts with. Dell has its own forum / message board that will help you out if you need help with any issues, HP does not offer that service.
4. Dell is more notable and has won more awards for their computers as well as service and support.
5. Dell is alot more customizable for parts and service, HP only sells preconfigured computers so if you want 1GB of Ram and a DVD+/-RW burner, your going to be paying a hefty penny

Neither. Any company selling whole computers is putting together a computer with parts built to their spec. That means they're built CHEAP. Even after all these years, both companies have an unacceptable return rate.
Buy a case new or at a goodwill, then buy a motherboard, hard drive, etc. There are yahoo groups where they'll walk you through the assembly, which isn't difficult at all.
Get your windows software on ebay, where its inexpensive compared to computer software stores.
Nothing like putting the computer together, knowing you can take care of any problem or upgrade.

Get a Dell computer if you have good credit. Get it with a 4 year guaranty. Anything happens they'll come and fix it. Also good computers but it sux talking to the service people.
