I believe 1/2 of a game means that say the astros play a game but the cardinals do not play that day, then there 1/2 game ahead!

actually the cards have played one less... think about it this way...
one team is 11-9, and one team is 10-10... they have both played 20 games, and the second team is one game back from the first. so the first team loses and their record is 11-10, and the second team still has 10-10... because this doesnt tie the two teams, they are now considered 1/2 a game back. to complete a 'full game', both teams need to play... so the cardinals have played one less game than the astros have, therefore they only have a half game lead.

Half games mean a team has played one less or one more game than the other.
For example:
One team is 98-60
The other is 97-60 (would be 1/2 game behind)
