What makes a cult isn't how weird its beliefs are, but how the church treats its members. Scientology isn't a cult because their members believe in engrams or Xenu, but because the Church of Scientology tries to silence all its critics with lawsuits and prevent members from leaving the organization. See the first link below for more info.
Also, you might do some research into:
* Jim Jones.
* the Heaven's Gate cult.
* the Shepherding Movement (a splinter Christian cult of the mid-1970s), which is a great example of how a church group can become a cult even when their beliefs remain mostly mainstream.
Good luck!

Rev. Jim Jones' People's Temple which moved to Guyana in the 70s and in which cult, the adult members drank cyanide-laced Kool-Aid type drink and fed the same to children and babies. People fleeing the ghastly insanity were murdered with hunting rifles by Jones' snipers. Jones himself presided over the grisliness (including the murder of CA Congressman Leo Ryan and other visitors on an airstrip) before he blew his own brains out.
Then the wannabe-preacher, Charles Willis Manson, needs little other introduction than his name.
And the substantially less grisly, but still totally nuts, whacko CA cult that was all bothered by the comet Hale-Bopp.
So the lesson is that guns, cyanide, LSD, California, knives and charismatic control-freak paranoid leaders aren't a good mix, unless you are a suicidal sheep. Bahhh!

Perhaps the two most misunderstood cults are the modern Democratic party and most Universities. Before you dismiss my comments, think about it a bit. If you define cult as an organization with an unbending ideology that is closed to new ideas, I think you will see that my point is close to the mark. There is no entity that I am aware of who is so closed to facts than a University professor.

I should go with Mormonism - looks sane on the outside and gets really batshit bonkers when you look deeper.
My definition of a cult is anything that demands money for you to progress and you can't go to the Mormon temple unless you have paid a tithe of your income.

I know of this one suicide cult where the leader told everyone to kill themselves. The next day, everyone followed through with the plan except the leader.
You could do an entire section on suicide cults. lol.

There has been publicity lately on the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It's an offshoot of the Mormon church. It's leader, Warren Jeffs, has recently been arrested. His followers practiced polygamy and forced marriage of young girls to older men.

that's all ok to throw out subheadings, what you extremely could use as a identify is the thesis of the paper. i'm particular you be attentive to this, yet i'm going to reiterate, condense the whole paper into one sentence, take the essence of that sentence and use it as your identify.

Write about the KKK.
Another really good one (and probably much more amusing and fun) would be about Scientology.
