The Friday the 13th series has 8 sequels (9 if you include Freddy Vs Jason). Are there are more movies with a seemingly endless - and pointless - amount of sequels?

Friday the 13th if you are talking pure "sequels" (takin out James Bond movies) The previous poster was actually underestimating the number. There are 11 Friday the 13th related movies. The original (technically not Jason, but so on), 2-8, Jason Goes to Hell, Jason X, and Freddy Vs. Jason. Again, if you count Bond movies, then this is all a moot point.

Police Academy has a fair few plus a spin-off tv series and cartoon I believe. Plus Star trek must be getting there.

I just found this "The record in the British film industry is the Carry On series of films which, after Carry On Sergeant in 1958, went on to produce a further 29 follow-ons." - http://www.communigate.co.uk/ne/filmguyernie/page11.phtml

but I don't know whether it's the overall winner. I can't think of anything to top it though.

Carry On and James Bond do have a majority but overall the character of Sherlock Holmes has appeared in more films than any other.

I don't know if they count as sequels but there's 21 James Bond films, that's a lot.

There were 32 Carry On.... films and the 21st official James Bond film will be released in Nov.
I say official because "Never say never again" was not an official Bond film

I'm thinking it's The Land Before Time series - it's up in the teens.
