Labor Day is supposed to be a day where hard working people can relax and take a day off. This seems stupid because most people end up working on this day anyway. I know we need some people to work on this day, but I think too many people work on this "holiday." What do you think?

This is one of the many reasons I hate the retail industry(stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's, etc.). I don't hate the actual stores themselves, just the executives who make people work on national holidays. It's a greedy and overly demanding industry that gives compensation not proportional to the amount of work you have to do.

There are Labor Day sales like 3 DVD's for $10, $200 off some TV, and so on. I will write a petition and lead a protest when this ugly industry starts to have sales on 9/11.

I think too many people work on ALL of the holidays anymore. I remember when practically nothing was open if it was a holiday. Now on holidays, even on Christmas day, you can go almost anywhere, and do almost anything you want to....to the movies, to the video store, to the grocery, what happened to staying home on the special days and spending time with your family? As for labor day, I have never even really known what it was for, but at least I get a day off!!!!

now that i am retired, every day is a holiday, but when i worked i always got labor day, along with most of the major ones off, and i greatly appreciated the time off to spend with the family..but as some other answerers have pointed out "holidays " are being blurred by the number of people required to work...It's too bad that America could not just shut down for a day to allow all a good rest. never happen though..

No day that I get paid for not working is pointless. Even when I did have to work that day, most jobs (the ones that had holiday benifits at least, I don't remember any further back) would pay me time and a half as if I was working overtime and also holiday pay, as if I had taken the day off. All in all, I would make as much as 250% my normal pay on that day. (this was a retail job, I don't remember about fast food)

It's not pointless to the millions of people who do get that extra long weekend off and get to come relax in the keys or wherever they go. I can't ever remember being off on Labor Day except when I was in the military. It's no big deal though, at least I get paid while these others are spending money when I'm making it! It's all good.

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

I think any holiday in which I get the day off is fabulous! Who am I to judge the worthiness of such a day? Just give me a three day weekend and I am all over it!
