I am also in Texas.....You may have grub worms. It is the time of year for them. Go to one of your brown areas. Grab a handful of the turf and see if you can lift it like you would loose carpet. If you can, you have grubs. They eat the roots and leave the top to die off. You can get a treatment at Home Depot. You spread it just like you would granulated fertilizer.

I would peel the grass back and look at the soil. Could be grub worms.
