Dinosaurs went extinct 70 million years ago, long, long before humans were around, so there was no word for them until the 1840's when people started discovering skeletons of these great beasts (disosaur means terrible lizard). Here is a bit of history. See the source for more info.
Ever since the 1840s when Richard Owen - founder of London's Natural History Museum - created the term dinosaur, his "fearfully great lizards" have gripped people's imaginations like no other creature of the past. The discovery of the massive and enigmatic remains of Iguanadon, Hylaeosaurus and Megalosaurus by British fossil hunters led Owen to realise they were onto something new and incredible. He distinguished dinosaurs from other reptiles, such as pterosaurs, mosasaurs, plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs, by their erect, two-legged, rather than a sprawling, crocodile-like gait.

There's not just one answer! People found dinosaur bones long before anyone knew exactly what the were. Chinese herbalists have long sold powdered bones of the loong and meng. These are types of dragons, but the Chinese dragon is much different from the European dragon. Some thought bones of dinosaurs and other large prehistoric beasts were those of Giants in their myths and legends. In Greek tales, Otus and Ephialtes were 54 feet tall. According to some accounts, Achilles the strongest and largest man in the Trojan War was 13.5 feet tall. Herakles the strongest man who ever lived was 7 to 15 feet tall in different tales. As you can see, dinosaurs were mistaken for many legendary or mythical creatures.

i have to argue that the earth IS millions of years old, carbon dating tells you that, science is infalable. remember that the two main dinosaurs we have left on earth are called Crocodiles and Komodo Dragons (theres your dragon) as for other species i assume they wouldn't have been called anything considering man was not alive at the same time as they were.
However if you belong to a God-Squad then you would probably believe dinosaurs were just made up to further prove the lifetime of the earth.

You need to separate fact from fiction. No human being, knight or otherwise, ever killed a "dragon". And no human being ever saw a living dinosaur. They were extinct 20 million years before human beings existed.

Before dinosaurs were recognised as the fossilised remains of ancient animals, they did not have a formal scientific name. People considered them to be the remains of animals that had died during the biblical flood, or the remains of monsters.
In 1841, Sir Richard Owen coined the word "dinosaur" to identify the fossils of extinct reptiles. It traces its origins to the Greek words deinos, meaning "terrible" or "fearfully great," and sauros, meaning "lizard."
