"The Flat Hat Club, or FHC for short, was founded on November 11, 1750, by six students at the College of William and Mary. FHC was the precursor to Phi Beta Kappa and thus has the distinction of being the first in line of the thousands of Greek-letter fraternities and sororities found on college campuses today."

For social sororities affiliated with the National Panhellenic Conference, the first was Alpha Delta Pi (originally known as the Adelphean Society) in 1851. The first "women's fraternity" was Pi Beta Phi in 1867 (under the name "I. C. Sorosis" and was the first women's group modeled after men's fraternities). The first "sorority" was Gamma Phi Beta in 1874 (the word "sorority" was coined for Gamma Phi Beta).
