Depends who you mean by "people".
If you're concerend about others who have physical access to your computer, make sure you have a password on it.
If you're concerned about a hacker on the net, make sure you have a firewall.
Just because someone has your IP address doesn't mean they can access your computer. Depending on your internet connection and provider, your IP address may well change every time you connect to the internet. As long as you have a firewall correctly installed and configured, you should be safe, even if someone has your IP address.

Ok people listen again, there is no privacy on an Internet. This Internet was created for Military Purposes and is now in the possesion of Corporate America. Any conception of any privacy on an Open Internet Connection is ludicrous to the beyond absurd factor.
The only way to keep any electronic data safe is never allow it even near an Internet or WWW active Electronic Device. And even that is not certain. Do you want to know how to get a persons name and adress. go to your local Tax Appraiser and ask them, it is there and they publish it every year, as they should. Any thought or hopes that you may have had for privacy and freedom was gone long before the Patriot Act, but that really didnt help matters any.
Your IP# is on every Email that is sent from your computer, your ISP has to give everything that is on your computer to the FBI or any Law Enforcement Agency that requests it, this may be changed Under Times or In the Event of a War.
Hate to burst any bubbles, but truth is Internet is a Joining of Electronic Data so it can be Shared and Viewed by all. The use is up the operater of a terminal. How it is used is also up to an indavidual, if it is legal to use an electronic device in one way or another is on the lawbooks.
I am ranting again?
oh well, love it or leave it, internet is almost as fun as a pony ride. but not as much joy as a cream pie fight.

best think i can think of: set up a firewall on your computer if your using windows xp with service pack 2 then you have one already; access the control panel to activate it (using classic view look for windows firewall). This will provide you with an adequate firewall.
I use norton firewall personally, which is a bit too secure at times.

They can tell everything from your computer.
For example, I know you have problem getting your white bras white again after washing them, you have a yorkshire terrior, you think you are overweight and you have a thing about eyeshadow and cucumbers.
Your best solution would be to install a firewall. These can either be s/w on your PC or built into your router/modem if you are on broadband.
Another safe practice is to turn ff your PC when you don't need it.

If you have a floppy drive, put anything sensitive on the disk. Then the only way they can get a hold of your information is to break into your house.
That can be done a lot easier than breaking into your computer btw.

One way to hide them is to right click on the file and make it hidden. Then make sure you know where it is. Other people then want be able to just go through files clicking on things. Another way is to put those files in a folder then put a password on that file. Or on individual files.
Good Luck

theres always flwas in man-made computers. generally no security software can secure your computer 100%. Notthing can help you. So don't worry about your personal information unless you have information about your hidden multi-million pound briefcase or you work for top secret agencies. No body will try to trace you unless you fall under above category.
