I don't think communism is likely to catch on in America. Once these kids graduate college they'll become capitalists just like the posers of the 1960's did. Don't sweat it. America is NOT ripe for communism.
Strictly speaking, communism describes an economic system and not a form of government. A country could have a communist democracy or a capitalist democracy. Likewise there could be a communist dictatorship or a capitalist dictatorship. That's just a few possibilities, of course.
Lazy people tend to like communism and industrious people tend to favor capitalism. There is little surprise there as they are seeking what they perceive to be their own best interests. Then there are the idealogues. That's often, but not always, a phase of youth.
PS: Ditto on the Animal Farm book recommendation.

The Idea of a common good is a very utopian idea. We see it in a lot of futuristic sci fi. The Idea is that everyone has a job or a place in the society and every one does ther job of the good of the common people. In a lot of ways that idea sounds christian.
How ever, it does not work. We people all have an ego of our own We have brains and ideas of our own. We want the oppurtunity to work for our selves even if it means more of a struggle.
I know that I do not speak for every one. I am mearly trying to paint a word picture.
There are places where the basic idea of communism works, a group home for the mentally challenged is a small example of that.
There are times when I almost feel that it would be interesting to try the idea of a common good for the people but history has shown that it is not the best way.

It wouldn't work in America and hasn't worked successfully anywhere. Read a book called Animal Farm. The philosophies of Comminism and/or Socialism have been popular on college campuses off and on for decades. The reason (in my most humble opinion) is that student lack the experience with the real world. They are naieve. They believe that they can make something work that no one else has been able to make work before. They envision a future that is ideal -- but they lack a realistic plan to get there. The sad fact is, some things that look great on paper (theory) don't translate to the real world. The baser human tendencies must be accounted for. We might not be proud of our failings as human beings, but pretending otherwise doesn't make them go away. In fact, pretending they don't exist feeds them.

No, communism isn't an option. Capitalism isn't too bad as long as everybody realizes that you have your country together.
So no nonsense like the rich getting richer and poor poorer. There needn't be the same income for everybody, difference is a stimulus. But there isn't anybody who really deserves a salary of a million per annum or more. No matter how big the company. All this ado about responsibility is nonsense when the leader of the pack tries to convince the workers that they should be moderate in their demands, while he himself lacks this modesty.

Communism failed whenever tried in history. The reason America became so powerful in the small amount of years as a country is because of the free market. You have to give people the incentive to do better, because that as a whole makes the country better.
Maybe Socialism would work in a utopian society where there is no sickness, or wars, (sort of like in Star Trek) but I don't think humanity is mature enough to make it work.

America will end up a quasi corporate-communist state if it keeps heading down the path it's on now. Corporate mergers will keep taking place, less and less competition until it is next to impossible to compete in the open market at which point we will be into a corporate communist country.

Personally I believe communism is the perfect government theory, but, like it's been stated before, it could never really happen.
Communism is impossible to really establish, mostly because one bad leader could ruin it for the rest of the country. You only have to look at Stalin to see that one in action (Soviet Union).
In the end, communism, though a perfect form of government in theory, is just a idealistic dream and impossible to really establish in the United States or anywhere else.

Communism is wrong, period.
How many people have been slaughtered by their government under a communist rule?
Read the links if you will, then come back with your thoughts.
