in or around Los Angeles, CA? I am of course looking for a serious, professional, clean and safe place with experienced staff. For those who experienced it: how bad does it hurt? How much was/is it? Are you happy with the result?
Thanks a lot!

I'm currently having hair on my bikini and underarms removed at American Laser Centers. I'm in Michigan and I don't know how far our it spans. I like them so far, I've only completed two treatments and you generally need 4-6. Most places sell in packages of six. You see noticeable results around 3-4, but after my two I notice the hair around the edge of the area doesn't grow in and it's patchy in some spots. For laser treatment to work best you have to have dark hair and light skin, although a lot of places have adjusted to take dark skin. The light concentrates on the dark hair so it'll only work if the hair you want gone is dark. A note- they say darker skin is generally more prone to scarring but you'd have to have a consultation to know for sure.
Pain--It hurts. A lot. It feels like someone is grabbing your skin and twisting it with really hot fingers. Some areas are more sensitive than others; the denser/darker the hair the more it hurts. However, the pain is almost instantaneous. As soon as the laser moves to another part, the pain from the first pulse stops but the second pulse starts. A good technician can go pretty fast so the whole procedure is quick. The next day or two you might feel like you have a minor to moderate sunburn--my skin takes it well and I feel like a very minor sunburn and only when my clothing rubs it.
Cost- It's expensive. For legs, most place consider your legs two areas- below the knee and above the knee. I've also seen it broken into three-below the knee and above the knee front/back. Each area runs about $300-500 per session. So full legs can cost a BUNDLE. Many places offer payment plans, read those carefully too-not that they're a scam, just make sure you understand it completely, like any loan. A lot of places offer special deals (buy one are get one half off, 25% off when you book it between certain dates). Beware places that offer super-fantastic deals or tell you two or three sessions will do it. Because of the way your hair grows (growth cycles) it takes several sessions to kill the hair in the optimal state of growth. It's also a long process in terms of the full six sessions. It's recommended that you have one to two monthes in between sessions. So the full procedure can last a around a year. Also, it is permanent but if the hair follicle takes a break for a year you'll see that pop up-some places offer free visits for x years afte the sixth treatment to take care of those strays. You might not ever kill a hair totally, but I hear it'd be like..three hairs that you just have to tweeze out and deal with. That answer that says it's hair reduction is incorrect--nearly all the hair will be killed. Also, electrolysis is like a much slower version of laser. The laser does the same thing but is cheaper and kills lots of hair at once-electrolysis kills one hair at a time but still takes several treatments and each process is VERY timely.
Besides the pain, which is quick, and the expense, which is high, I am happy that I'm having this done. Although my arms and bikini aren't even half way through the procedure, I too plan on saving up for my legs. If your an obsessive shaver, I'd do it. I already see some difference and the thought of never shaving again is one of the greatest joys :) My advice is to check around your ares, beware of spas that claim to do it. They're SO cheap but they don't work or leave heavy scarring. A place that does only that type of work is probably your best bet. See a few places, don't be afraid to ask lots of questions. It's a major expense and a major decision. Try going to Americanlaser.com and reading over the information. Even if there aren't any near you it's a good way to learn about the procedure and see if it's right for you.

Laser hair removal is only for permanent Hair REDUCTION. The only permanent removal is electrolysis.

I do know the hair has to be dark. If it is light the hair can't be lasered. Most dermatologist offices have it.
