Within the EU - German without a doubt. Official language in the largest country in the EU (Germany) as well as in Austria and Switzerland.

German is also very common as a second language (more-so than English) in Eastern Europe.

French is probably second most common mother tongue (just guess though) as it's spoken in France, Luxembourg, Belgium and Switzerland.

English in third place, although it's the most widely spoken as a first / second / third language.

1 Russia 143,974,059
2 Germany 82,424,609
3 France 60,424,213
4 United Kingdom 60,270,708
5 Italy 58,057,477
6 Ukraine 47,732,079
7 Spain 40,280,780
8 Poland 38,626,349
9 Romania 22,355,551
10 Netherlands

but Russia has many different languages so I would say it would be German.

The first most important in not only Europe , but also in the whole world, it's English. Then, the next most important and essential is Spanish. If not, French. you don't need to learn anything else apart from these three.

common language should be used through majority of Europeans, yet once you vacation you could locate that in huge ecu international locations they communicate their own language and they are pleased with it. or maybe in those small ones. No common language. If there develop right into a familiar language, you'll not purchase dictionaries and take language training.

English is the most widely used in the EU, although the ignorant French have a habit of pretending that they cannot speak English when you visit. They are just pissed that their language will one day just fade and die.
