Check or jiggle the bulkhead connections and try by-passing the factory ammeter in dash.

First of all put a VOLT meter across the battery and see what if any volts the alt is putting out. If there is any out put, it should be around 13.5 to 14 volts. Do not rely on an amp meeter. It can be deciving. There may be many reasons your having problems. One could be lack of power to the alt. This could be caused by a blowen fuse, a bad fuse link, or just a plain bad coupler somewhere. also be aware that if the belt is loose or worren, it could slip at higher RPMs and not charge or keep up. Raise the RPMs conciderly and see if your voltage dont drop. Always have the alt benched checked at the parts house, even if it is new.

Welcome to the world of dodge! Those 70's year dodges had serious alternator problems. Does it have an internal or external regulator? They also had serious diode problems in them. Could be a wire at the starter. I don't believe they had any fuseable links in those years. Best of luck! I used to beat my brains out with the few I owned and then I got smart and went to Chevy!

Find and check fusible links in wires if they have any. Sometimes wires, especially old ones, can brake inside the rubber casing, if that is what is wrong it can be very hard to find.
Good luck.

check all your fusible links connected with the alt. sometimes they look like ordinary wiring but a bigger gauge.otherwise they'll have square or rectangular rubber attatchment.
