Positive: More new drivers would be emotionally and mentally prepared for the responsibility. Fewer deaths among young drivers who either are inept or are taking too many risks. Less time wasted driving around aimlessly. Fewer opportunities for young people to go places where they shouldn't (subjecting themselves to the dangers of drugs, alcohol, violence, etc.).

Negative: Makes it more difficult for teens to go where they need to go (school, library, sports practice, dates, etc.). Puts more burden on parents' and older siblings' time to drive them where they need to go. Delays the time when they begin learning and practicing driving skills. If driving is delayed until students are in college, they will never have the opportunity to gain extensive driving experience under the supervision of their parents, which is really the only way they will develop advanced driving skills, since basic driving schools absolutely do not teach students everything they should know to be good drivers (which explains why there is so much bad driving going on).

Good luck to you.

I am torn. I think that parents look forward to when their active child turns 16 so they have to stop shuttling them around everywhere. I do get that.

But I think the statistics don't lie - more vehicle accidents involve a driver aged 16 - 18 years in age. 16 year olds have this mentality that nothing will happen to them, and that they can do whatever they want because the only result is punishment from their parents. They don't realize that not only do they take their own lives into their hands, but the lives of every single other person that is driving on the same road/street as they are.

What they have done in WI is that a person that is driving between the ages of 16 and 18 can only have one other person in the car with them of the same age grouping. So they can't fall into the whole peer pressure thing that results from a group of kids in a car. It has helped with accidents and deaths, but more needs to be done.

If that age group proved that they are responsible enough to take on such a responsibility, then maybe more would not feel this way. But I don't like fearing the side of town by the high school at lunch time or when school lets out when I am having to go somewhere with my baby daughter in the car. Is that really fair to me and my family?

i'm 32. I truly were doing a number of automobile safe practices research that contain this concern so right that is my 2 cents: very few newbie drivers in US truly go through ideal driving college. once you employ a driving instructor for a consultation or 2 does no longer truly count number. So this virtually has no result on in the present day's kids readiness to get behind the wheel. What does make a distinction at this age is the finest options-set which typically relies upon on the teen's mentoring between the a lengthy time period of 14 to 17. If the teen motive force has discovered to take a diligent attitude to the failings that he/she does (like driving, as an social gathering), then the he/she has a good risk of being a miles extra perfect motive force and extra driving college practise can strengthen that. elevating the driving age to 19 may have little to no progression and could in elementary words reason unnecessary legal equipment conflict.

Well, at least they are getting smarter in some areas!

Young drivers are much more likely than older drivers to get in an accident. The difference between a 16 an 18 year old is huge. The difference between an 18 and a 21 year old is huge.
They don't fully understand the responisiblity and danger of getting behind the wheel.
The age should be at least 18, at least.

1. The federal government should not involved in a decision that is clearly in the realm of states' rights.

2. Although insurance companies (who really run the government through the large sums of money in the forms of donations to the two major political parties that can influence any legislation they want) would love to raise the age to reduce claims, they would take a hit on the extortion like rates they charge younger drivers.

doesn't really bother me I already have mine so i will not be affected by it. But I do think it was a smart move. When I watched all the shows doing research on this subject it was pretty eye opening. Plus I see how my neice drives when she's alone compared to when she has friends with her....she shows off speeding and driving stupid so they will think she's cool! Of course I went through this stage too we all do i think, but that's all the more reason to raise the age!

What government? Your state? Or are the feds blackmailing the states again? Like they did to raise the drinking age to 21.

That is a tough one. i would like to say they should raise it. At 16 I wouldn't say that though. There are some 16 year olds that are responsible enough to operate a vehicle safely. On the other hand, there are way more irresponsible 16 year old out there......
