Depending on his age and how enthusiastic he is.
My fiance and I have been together for about a year. There is a big difference in age(Im in my mid 20's and he is early 40's) and when we first started out it was lame. We are both very outgoing people and it just took time to get to know each other and what we both like to do.
After 6month or so we started doing more things together. He surprised me with a bubble bath after I got off from work. My favorite roses. And we attend ballroom dancing lessons so we could spend more time together.
It all depends on how he is and how you go about it... Sometimes you have to hint or take the initiative. Hope things work out for you both.

Unfortunately I think they've either got it or they haven't!
If it appears that they haven't, just leave very blatant hints around the place... such as a vaction brochure with a location circled... casually left on the couch... *hint hint*
