if you imagine 5.55=x then why does a have the same value as eb? this came up in my physics test last week,

You've provided two separate values for x, 55.5 and 5.55, and then asked a question about a and eb which are completely undefined. eb is not a standard symbol I'm aware of, and a is used for two many different things to have any idea. Perhaps if you provided the context, I could figure out what you're asking about.
