First of all, my friends and I are gay, so before you all get defensive I just wanted to put that out there. My guy friends call each other "bakalo" because they think it means fag in tagalog. Are they correct? (I know my spelling is probably way off)

BTW, I've checked online dictionaries and so far they don't have that exact word in them...I'm referring to f@g. I know a lot of Filipinos use this site, so I was hoping to get an answer from a native speaker.

Gay in Tagalog is termed as "Bakla". From such word many derivation has resulted such as "Bakling", Baklito","Bakalo", "Bakloy",etc. most often used by non-gay person to avoid using the term "bakla" directly which seems to be offensive word to the gay community. However whatever word version is used they are still understood just the same Another term used to refer to a gay which seem to be less offensive is the word "Bading".
Another point I want you to know that Filipinos are so fund of using a term to mean different from its real meaning. New meaning for a term is always created especially among the youths.
The "Bakalo" term you are asking about, you are right. It is one of the meanings implied by such term. It describes "manly" characteristics which some versions says it is derived from a word "baka" (meaning cow) which its strength is associated to a man. Some says "bakalo" implies the masculine version of "bakla" though it is commonly used in "street language" thus you won't find it in dictionary. (Please note that in Filipino words ending in "a" usually denotes feminine gender while those ending in "o" refers to a masculine gender. )
There's another terms that sounds similar to what you are asking. The words "Barako" or " Balako" also refers to a man.
As I told you new meanings are always given to a certain word every now and then and a new term coined to a certain word is always invented so do not react right away once you will hear a word that sounds vague that seems to have unpleasant meaning, you might be wrong in what they really mean.

"Bakla" is tagalog for a gay person. "badin" is used too. I guss baklo could be used for fun. (the spanish interchange the a and o at the end of their words for gender). if your friends like to be known as Manly gay guys I would be ok to use Baklo ..... "Lalaqui" is also used for a gay person

"tomboy" or "tibo" is more applicable for gay women
