Is a Wireless card installed first.
If not maybe the newer Laptop came with the newer Intel Wireless Chipset.
If you have "wireless" capabilities from either the card or its built in you have to find a wireless hot spot to actrually test and configure your laptop.
Go to Control Panel, WireLess Network, Next, Add to an existing or Set Up New, Continue setup.

If your laptop is already integrated with wireless capability, you can set up a wireless connection in Network/Dial Up connections in the control panel. Once your wireless connection is set up, you may have to flip a small switch to turn it on. For the Toshiba Satellite (the new more popular wireless laptops), the switch is located on the right side of the keyboard on the side of the unit, toward the front of the machine, for example.

Many laptops have a slot for the insertion of a card to make it wireless. But, you will have to have the receiver set up and into a modem, like a cable modem, in order to access the Internet. It isn't like a cellular phone where one just punches in a phone number; you can''t simply type in an URL and be connected to the Internet. You must have a router or receiver plugged into the modem.

If it is a reletivle new computer they all come with it built in...there should be an Icon on the little side menu of your taskbar pretaining to that. If there is a wireless network around and it is wirelss capable, it should automatically find it and connect although you might have to doulbe click the icon and refresh the list and then connect to one with a strong enough signal
