Slayer and Cradle of Filth do death metal with a bit of black metal mix but my all time favourite has to be Primordial.

Deicide were the one of the first truly black metal bands in the modern sense, but Venom are considered by many to be where the genre originated.
However, the scandinavian black metal scene gained a lot of coverage about a decade ago thanks to the desicration of church yards by black metal fans, and the controversy surrounding the murder of the Ãystein Aarseth (or Euronymous) by Varg Vikernes(or Count Grishnackh as he was known) from Burzum. Burzum themselves started in 1987, but Venom were around in the very early 80's at around the time of the NWOBHM.

Black metal developed in Scandanavia but I think there was a general transition from death metal rather than a sudden new style pioneered by one band.

Venom, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, they were the first "death metal" bands.
