My computer at work is like that all the time. Do a defrag and it should be good as new. When youdelete files the space that is was in is acting like it's still there. When you defrag it clears up all that space.

Hey

The problem here could be that its getting old hardware wise and needs an upgrade [adding RAM is a cheaper option] apart from maintaining it by cleaning unnecessary files / programs regularly.

Other problem could be with Operating System. As the system is being used the registry of the system keeps accumulating junk or unnecessary entries. You can manually clean it but its a risky process and may leave your OS useless which will require reinstallation and loss of data.

So the best option out is restore your OS to the new state. The laptops usually come with a recovery CD which contain the OS and some basic utilities. You should use that to restore system to its original state. This does not delete your data and renews the OS. However to be on the safe side, please take your data backup on a different drive and possibly a DVD.

Once you have done that, use the recovery CD to restore by inserting the CD in the drive and rebooting the system. This will then go to recovery mode and you just need to follow some simple instructions on screen. This should do the trick to improve quite a bit. Not to mention this would remove any adware/spyware and need to defrag and scandisk operations.

I'd recommend adding a little bit of RAM as well for much better performance.

Hope this helps.
Cheers!

There are few possibilities: You say you scanned for Virus but did you scan for spyware? Spyware is often overlooked by virus scanners and can slow down the computer.
You say you removed unused programs, but did you remove the startup entries such as preloaders, autoupdaters, utilities and other unneeded processes using a startup manager?
Are you using a security suite? Some security software such as Norton is very bloated and seriously impacts the performance of your system. If the program is protecting the computer by keeping you from being able to use it at all, it does you no good. Any AOL software, ditto!
Is your laptop running hot due to clogged ventilation ports? If so the processor will slow down to keep from burning itself out.

Scan for viruses using Panda or McAfee antivirus solutions.
If that doesn't change the situation, clear your Temporary Internet files and delete all cookies. Then discard any file, document or folder you are no longer needing and don't forget to delete it from ur recycle bin either. If it still doesn't work, then I'm sorry you'll have to buy a new lap-top or increase your memory capacity.

Scanning for viruses is fine if your virus software is up-to-date. Remember, there are new viruses as well as WORMS coming out every day. You need to update your virus definitions often, which you may have difficulty doing now if you've already been infected with a new virus. You may need to have your machine examined by a pro, then remember to update AND SCAN more often!

You did not specify the configurations of your computer and which operating system you are using.

any how, try to see what process are using more cpu and memory.
-click alt+ctrl+del click on tanskmanager - click process - click on the column CPU first and see what is there on the top, next click on momory usage and try to see what is on top. and try to reduce this usage.

remove all the process which are not necessary to you.you need to be bit carefull while selecting and disabling this process.
right click on my comuter ( am assuming that ur using win2000 or xp ). click manage - click (expand) services and applications.- click services- select the service which you dont want (you have to decide which services you dont need. based on what type of work you are doing you can disable them double click on the service properties stop the service and disable them (startup type to be manual or disable ). all the system try icons also will cause to memory usage so when your systems boots up try to remove all the icons which are there in the system tray(right side corder down you will icons right click them and exit if your not using them.). to delete this permanently start - run - type regedit.
expant HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE- Software- microsoft - windows- currentversion -click on run - and on the right side pan you will see somany applications which are starting along with your system select them and delete them.

the other option is start - run- msconfig - click start up - uncheck the application which you dont want to boot along with ur operating system.

A lot of times it's caused by spy or ad-ware on your computer. Try going to www.bleepingcomputer.com and find what ails you there. Sometimes it can also be an upstream difficulty that affects your ISP at your level, I have encountered this personally.

You need to remove adware and spyware. That did the trick on my PC. You need to do this on a regular basis. Also you need to strengthen your cookie handling so it always asks you before setting a cookie. And you need to set your internet options to block pop-ups. Do you have a lot of TSR (terminate and stay resident) programs running? Do you have a flabby screensaver?
