Apart form get a new car advice, I wonder can anyone suggest how to make an engine start again. I have changed the plugs , sprayed , some instant start stuff into the Carb and wiped the plugs, But she still wont start. Funny thing when I spray the instant start thing into the carb , it sounds like it wants to start more than if I let the stuff evaporate. Any ideas

if the engine is turning over the starter and battery are fine dont listen to all those other idiots

if the car is indeed a 1998 it should be fuel injected and starter fluid is pretty useless because you are not spraying that stuff into a carb. You are probably spraying it into the throttle body and the reason it sounds like it wants to start more when it evaporates is because the fumes have atomized with the O2 in the mainfold. If plugs and wires are good then I would say check your ignition module and coil. They may be burning out.

On way to check to see if you are getting a spark is to pull a plug and place it into its plug wire and lay it against the engine block (outside the engine). Then get someone to turn the engine over and while they are doing so look to see if there is an "arch" jumping from the plug to the engine block. This means that you have spark and ignition is probably not your problem.

If you are getting a spark this means that the electrical system is out of the diagnosis. Next you will move on to fuel this will include checking the pressure regulator and maybe even the injectors.

If it wants to run on whatever your spraying into the intake, then the ignition side is ok, so if the plugs are sparking the tdc sensor is working (sensor that tells the computer the engines turning), if the tdc sensor is working then the fuel injectors will be pulsing (opening and closing), so the only thing left is fuel, or fuel pressure, assuming theres fuel in the tank then the pump isnt working, lift up the back seat and there will be a round cover with 3 screws remove this and u will see the pump, try banging it with ur fist as someone trys to start the engine, this might free it off so u know its definately that. Its fairly common fault on these anyway. just tap the big ring around the pump anti clockwise to release it, and obviously disconnect the pipes and wiring to it.

Before you do anything with the fuel, and I mean anything at all, you must get the ignition system checked.

You don't say what type of car it is apart from it's obviously petrol or you wouldn't have plugs.

Take the top off the distributor, underneath you will find a rotor, get someone to watch it as you operate the starter for a second or 2 but no longer. Does it go round? May be a snapped cam belt if it doesn't.

Does your distributor have contact breaker points in it? They may have worn and closed up.

Sounds like you need a visit from a friendly mechanic

First off, don't be spraying ether in there! You'll be putting a new engine in for sure! Should be illegal to sell that stuff. If an engine is tuned properly and everything is done right, there should never be a need for ether!
Did you do your own tune-up? You probably have all the wires screwed up. Get a Chilton's and make sure you have the wires on the cap right and the right spark plug. I think you'll find your problem solved!

Usual reasons are electrical. The damp weather can mean poor contact. Check battery terminals are not rusty or slack if you cannot get them off spray with the stuff and later make sure you grease to stop damp. Have you got any petrol in. Try jump start with a friends leads. If it does and a yellow light comes on it usually means the alternator is discharging the battery so you ,may have problems again. Get a jump start first and then if not effective call your breakdown service or if not sign up for one immediately.

I had a similar problem with the wife Nissan Sunny, I tried everything I knew from petrol in the carb to replacing the fuel filter still did not start, I than remembered something I learnt from my days of repairing cars was that, by taking the petrol cap off this will will allow any vacuum to escape and allow the flow of petrol to resume. I hope this will help

Two reasons a car won't start. Fuel or fire.

Fire. Turn the key. Ignition noises? OK
Fuel. Any oil in the car? Check oil. How much fuel? Parked on a hill with the front of the car facing uphill? Fuel leak.

Alternative - call the AA and join by the roadside. Only £39 quid.

Sounds like the engine may not be getting enough fuel if your instant start spray sounds like it's catching. Check your fuel lines and fuel filter. You might want to prime the carb with a little gasoline and see if it starts on that.

just a few things first you havent got a carb its a throttle body, if it hasnt started on what you have sprayed in its not going too.
crack off the fuel feed pipe to the injectors and see if any fuel is present when the ignition is turned on, if there is then you need to check you have a spark!
has your car got the key pad immobiliser? these are common for going faulty.
