In various books, I've seen one color or shade placed upon different backgrounds. For example, a medium grey square is placed in the center of a larger square of white. Beside it, a square of the same medium grey is placed in a larger black square. The grey on the white seems to be much darker than the grey on the black. Try a red square on a larger green square or vice versa to see what happens. I mean spectrum colors, not pastels, to get the full effect.

yes, common and normal, heard about comlipentary colors that are playing off eachother, vibrating back and forth.

yes, the theory or relativity applies to color as well. it can also affect the way we perceive the size of the object.
