Specifically: How many square miles of (each) Virginia, Maryland, and DC are encircled by the Capital Beltway (I-495)? What is the ratio of MD:VA:DC inside the beltway?

Hmmm. Looking at the Google map, I'd say:
Approximately 2/3 of the area inside the capital beltway is east of the Potomac River, including 100% of the District of Columbia, which is approximately 1/2 of the area, the rest being in the state of Maryland.
Approximately 1/3 of the area lies west of the Potomac River, meaning that everything west is in the state of Virginia.
There are several "municipalities" on both sides of the river, including Bladensburg, Chevy Chase, College Park and New Carrolton on the Maryland side and both Alexandria and Arlington on the Virginia side.
Sorry, but I don't know the square mile figures and am not even sure how to get them.

I-495 crosses from VA into DC at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge for perhaps a few hundred feet before crossing into MD.

I-495 traverses three jurisdictions:

Prince George's County, MD from the DC line to some point between Exit 27 and Exit 28. One would have to calculate the area between I-495, the DC line and the Montgomery County line. PG County includes the municipalities described by the previous poster.

Montgomery County, MD from the PG County line to the Virginia State line located on the shore of the Potomac River. One would have to calculate the area between I-495, the DC state line and the Potomac River. Montgomery County also includes the municipality of Takoma Park, Kensington and Chevy Chase (there are like 5 of them with names beginning with Chevy Chase)

Fairfax County, VA from the MD state line to the DC state line. One would have to calculate the area between I-495, Arlington County line and the DC line.

I'm not sure if such areas have ever been calculated.

Had traversed the Capital Beltway before. Can't figure all the municipalities, you can refer to the guiding maps or you goggle it. tnxs.
