Tough question
I'd say a republican today is not what it was years ago because today they have accepted lies to win elections. For the most part they believe in winning at no cost, breaking rules but believing everybody else should obey them and using Christianity to justify violent acts.

Being a Republican today means the same thing it has meant for a long time. Republicans have believed for a long time that the moral standard for our behavior is the Bible (even though there are quite a few Republicans who don't obey it), that each citizen is responsible for his/her own actions -- no excuses, that each citizen is responsible for taking care of his/her family -- no excuses, that people who work harder or come up with new ideas/products/services should be rewarded, that discrimination or preferential treatment based on race, creed, gender, or natural origin is wrong, that breaking the law is wrong and that people who break the law should be punished (not coddled), that rules and laws are necessary for the protection of our society as a whole, that we have a duty to our fellow citizens and to our country to preserve and defend freedom, and that the Government was NOT designed to handle every single problem facing our country -- be it political, social, environmental, economic, or dealing with foreign policy. Most importantly, being a Republican today means not taking freedom for granted and professing allegiance to the U.S., which is still the greatest nation in the world despite its faults and despite the opinions of people both here and abroad.

Being a Repubican means that I am very P-offed!
First of all, the Dems aren't an option. They have become a bunch of whining Socialist pro Europe wimps. They are pathetic jokes, like a Clown Convention, so I can't deal with them.
The problem I have with the Repubs, as a Repub are the following:
Too much spending
Wheres the wall between the US and Mexico?
They have the sales abilities of a "Grapefruit". They couldn't sell cold water to desert dwellers.
A president who was a good speaker and motivator would make mince meat of this wimpy almost pro terrorist Dem agenda. They want to give American lawyers to terror detainees. Yes, many of them do. If Guiliani was president, he would bury the Dems over this issue alone.
The Repubs need to me more forceful in important issues like, Privitization of S Security, the flawed tax system, etc.
That is the biggest problem I have with the Repubs now. And quite frankly, Bush needs to be HARDER on the terrorists and the Dems.
And lastly, the Repubs need to distance themselves from the religious right, while at the same time keeping those votes, that is a hard task.

I'm a Republican and I haven't a clue.
Smart people to head agences
Balanced (or at least close) budgets
Smaller government
Good, workable ideas
States being able to have more control
I suppose I could continue but what's the point. The current crew is about as far from that as it's possible to be.
Don't read into this I'm in favor of the other side I'm just against the current group of idiots.

Someone who favours a republic; an anti-monarchist.
(Esp. historical) Someone who favours social equality and opposes aristocracy and privilege. Sir, there is one Mrs Macaulay in this town, a great republican. One day when I was at her house, I put on a very grave countenance, and said to her, 'Madam, I am now become a convert to your way of thinking. I am convinced that all mankind are upon an equal footing...' (Boswell, The Life of Samuel Johnson, 1791). Travels of a Republican Radical in Search of Hot Water - Title of a collection of essays published by the leftwing novelist H. G. Wells in 1939.

Depends on what type of Republican you are.
I'm an old school republican that thinks government should be smaller and a lot of power should be diverted back to the states...especially the Education Department.
I don't know that anyone, Republican or Democrat will ever be the perfect choice for me.

To me it means a way to blame others for your mistakes and then have the right to get angry when people question you about it. It also means that you have the right to bully people and get away with it.
Doesn't this sound a lot like what we try to teach our kids not to do when they are young????? If children learn by the models around them, aren't we teaching our children that if you get caught, just tell them you are a republican and you will get away with it!!!!

It means crushing the skulls of non-believers with their Bibles.
Likewise, being a Democrat means you need protection from yourself. It also means you've got a hand in each of your pockets, but none of them are yours.

It means to care more about money and power than compassion. It means having blind faith in a president who clearly doesn't deserve any confidence at all. It means bashing all those who oppose you, even in the slightest.

For me, it means reason over emotion. It means standing up to tyranny and oppression. It means helping people become more self sufficient, not dependent. It means responsible morality and justice.
