My parents were living in Annapolis, Maryland, when I was born, so I have always considered Maryland to be my home state. I don't live there now (I have lived in Japan for the past 20 years). Maryland is a small but beautiful state.

It is bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and has an extensive coastline which includes parts of Chincoteague and Assateague islands (famous for their wild ponies). The Eastern Shore (which is shared by all of Delaware and a small part of coastal Virginia) is defined by the Chesapeake Bay, one of the largest bays in the world, and which is famous for crabs (and beer).
Maryland's southern boundary is the Potomac River, which separates Maryland from Virginia, at least as far west as Cumberland, at which point Maryland becomes extremely thin.
The northern boundary is the famous Mason-Dixon Line, separting Maryland from Pennsylvania.
The western boundary sets Maryland apart from West Virginia, and is in the rugged Appalachian Mountains.

In addition to its natural appeal, Maryland also has several interesting urban attractions.
Annapolis, the state capitol, is an old (by US standards) town that has been preserved to a large degree. It is home to the US Naval Academy, St. John's College (one of the oldest in the US), an excellent harbor, and it is a great town for walking around and sightseeing.
Baltimore is a large industrial city with about a million people. It is home to Johns Hopkins University, the Peabody Conservatory of Music, a great zoo, several outstanding museums, and the renovated Inner Harbor area which includes a world-class aquarium.

So, I like Maryland because you can find so many different kinds of things to do, no matter what your taste. Museums and nightlife, sailing and mountain hiking ... whatever you want, you can find it in Maryland.

I was born and raised in North Dakota, USA. I still live here. I like it but it's always too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer. My favorite season is fall, all the tree leaves turning yellow and orange.
