It seems many people's answers are informed by their religious beliefs which have not been verified by science. In the Western World its Christianity mostly (in its various forms), in the Middle East its Islam, India you got the Hindus. and Asia has Buddhists and so on.
Certainly there are limits to science at this time and many scientists are pretty arrogant about what they don't know, but just b/c there's wisdom in the Bible or Koran or Sutra's does not prove any1's beliefs.
Ultimately it seems know no 1 knows for sure and the reason many believe in the afterlife is the desire or fear as to not be nonexistant after we die.
A girl (whose friend I think killed herself) told me once that dead people live on in their "loved one's" memories. That seems like small consolation if your nonexistant but who knows maybe she's right.
Science should investigate this more.

As with all things on the border of belief and science.....we do not have irrefutable proof of it.
Even if we did have proof many would not believe it because of their beliefs.
Scientific proof stems largely from our ability to repeatedly and predictably measure something. Even then there is still some doubt as to what we are measuring. (eg clocks run at a different speed on satellites....which reflects Einsteins relativity theories).
Proof can also come from theories or ideas that are so well accepted that they are accepted as fact. Take evolution for example, which though extremely attractive is still only a theory. Most people discount the Adam and Eve idea because if you are familiar with genes then you believe two people couldn't produce a diverse enough gene pool to produce a healthy extended family.
But what if their 3rd generation offspring were all genetically deformed and as a result their genes 'mutated' to form our current gene pool ? Weird but who knows.
Once we can consistently measure the effect of people resident in the afterlife then we will be able to accept it as fact.

Consider your own existence. Look down at yourself and be aware of you own awareness that you exist. You will realize the thing you refer to as I is different than the thing you refer to as your body. Think about death, think about reading these answers, typing the question, all the things your past and future. Think about it. I and me; can you imagine not existing? How does one NOT EXIST? I know I sit aware of me in all the ways I can be, sure, I do not think of my beating heart, but am I not always aware if I am comfortable, happy or sad, of the itch on my back, that love my friends and family?
This is my evidence life goes on after death. Non existence is simply a concept I cannot grasp. If there is nothing to one's self perception, why are so few animals capable of it?

Sorry, but the afterlife is something that cannot be dealt with scientifically. The realm after death is not accessible here in this life, but there can NEVER be any proof, as far as I can tell. But that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.
