Maybe you clicked a"Compatibility mode" for those folders so the computer is trying to limit you to short names to be compatible with older operating systems.
The easiest thing is to make some new folders and drag the files over into them and then delete the defective folders.

Without an OS I have no real area to approach from. Win3x,Win95,Win98,Win98SE,WinNT,Win2000,Win2000SP2,WinXP,WinVista,,,lotsa data grams there. Support for Long Filenames is normally in the Code, on old windows that was simple DOS, on new windows that is MSDOS, same DOS,different name and an adjusted structure so it cannot be looked at by the Purchaser.
Is prolly just a setting of View Files, or Folder View,,change it to View All and Include Support for Long Filenames.
Maybe wanna check out annoyances.org or computerhope.com or even microsoft.com/help/youroperateingsystem/time of day/name of user/closest relative not living with you/bank acct/momies name.com
Prolly just a mouse click in the View Files though, good luck.
