Funding cuts to adult literacy programs, CMHC housing programs that address homlessness...it's sad they are targeting the already disadvantaged. Harper's government is just plain mean-spirited.

I find it ironic that the same day the federal government announced the cuts to the adult literacy programme, the prime ministers wife was out there advocating literacy.
I also have to agree with you and laugh, as well about the Harper government being mean-spirited. When Flarehty (I don't care if I spelled his name wrong) was asked to comment on the advocacy and the recent cut to the programme, he said it was symptomatic of a larger problem if so many people are illiterate. Then he said it was better to spend the money to educate kids rather than spend the money to help illiterate adults.
I could comment on the other issues but I'm sure everyone has stopped reading by now...

It is unfortunate and not unexpected. The Conservatives are basically a mean-spirited bunch that has as it's central guiding "principle" the phrase "I'm okay, jack." This phrase was used in the 1930s ("dirty 30s," "les années dull") to describe the attitude displayed by the well off in the face of the misery surrounding them. A former Conservative finance minister (now Canada's ambassador to the US) once even said that the rich were a minority and that protecting the rich was similar to establishing minority rights.
This is the unfortunate result of having over one third of the Canadian electors vote for these regressive conservatives. I only hope that the mean-spirited-ness and I'm-okay-jack-ism does not spread any further and that electors learn to vote for their ideals.
I really wish we had proportional representation.

it is sad that programs for the disadvantaged are suffering more cost cuts. Maybe we need to get more private funding for these programs, corporations could make donations and recieve tax breaks as well.

When Liberals do budget cuts it's "fiscal responsibility"-Chretien was the biggest budget cutter in Canadian history and he was proud of it. When Conservative do budget cuts it's "mean spirited". I know propaganda when I see it.
