I am new to this school, and while going through my chemical closet, I found a plastic sandwich bag with a shiny, purple solid inside. It was broken into small pieces. All I know about the material thus far is that it dissolves in water and turns the solution a dark pink color. Any information on where I could look up the physical properties of certain elements or chemicals would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sounds a little like KMnO4 but of course there no way I can know for sure. It's melting point is 270 degrees C (Decomp). So do a melting point test, if the solid is pure it should melt at 270....if it's potassium permanganate. Good luck!

In addition to potassium permanganate it could also be elemental iodine crystals. Does it have a strong odor? If so it is probably iodine.
