We are thinking about trying to spray our ceiling with a textured finish. We currently have 1 foot square ceiling tiles that have been stapled on. We were wondering if there was anything we needed to be concerned with in doing so, such as too much weight for them just being stapled on.

You need to use a primer.

Depends on the tiles... you may have to put a primer on first, and the staples may not take the weight depending on the product you're using to texture.

I wouldn't do textured ceilings for anything! I have looked after rental apartments for 5 years and the textured ceiling and walls are a real pain to clean, repair, replace and paint.

Little spiders love the grooves and you'll end up sweeping the ceiling often, which causes the texture to fall off and then you need to clean the floor. Eventually you will have cleaned the ceiling so often you have to repair areas!

Ah, it's the battle of textured-celiing vs workload. Guess which one wins?

Yes you can do it; however your concern about the weight is a good one. Since they are stapled and not glued that is a good start. How long are the staples and are they just into drywall or are they into studs and rackers? If you think the tiles are secure you will be OK to spray but do it in a couple of lighter coats to make sure.

W E L L.... Y E S ... I have done it but... you prime it first with KILZ.. the type you buy at Home Depot.. that is painted on.. not sprayed.. At least, I do not think they have that in a spray yet.. THEN.. you can buy the texture spray but.. IMPORTANT.. follow the instructions... It might be best.. if possible. to experiment on a section.. You must follow the instructions.. I have done it and now I can do it very well.. with the spray texture stuff

we've painted over our textured ceilings effectively through using a roller. i imagine I keep in mind finding out on one which had a fluffier texture so it might want to carry extra paint and then fill the paint in gently around the feel in the ceiling. i'm particularly particular the roller programs might want to element out the style you'll favor. also, in the journey that they have got discolored through the years, it could be perfect to commence with a product said as Kilz. this may help preclude any staining from water damage or cooking oils leaking through your new paint.
