What has he done to give him Hero status, did he help rescue the people from 9/11 or something? I thought you had to do something heroic to be considered a hero.

Who is supposed to determine what's heroic? Steve Irwin had a great passion and risked his life for a very important cause. I'm not a nature nut, but if there is no one to show the beauty of nature it is taken for granted and destroyed and in the end all people suffer. He did not just have a love for animals, ultimately , he was protecting you too. He fought to keep nature, one of the things God gave people dominion over. Look at all of the illnesses caused because of how we pollute nature, toxins in water, food is less nutritious, smog that cause millions of children to have asthma, the list goes on. Just because you don't understand, does not make it less heroic and just like Steve Irwin, the people who were "heroic" in 9/11 got a paycheck, so tell me the difference?

Well I don't have cable and never watched an entire episode of the show but the only thing I can figure is that in todays world of so mauch bad tv and bad celebraties maybe "they" consider a man with a good heart, loving wife and beautiful children to be a hero. You don't have to do something over the top to be someones hero. You can be a person that follow a dream and that emcourages others to follow their dreams. I am not saying that this man is my hero but I am giving a way of looking at it.

"I thought you had to do something heroic to be considered a hero"...this is completely wrong! Open up your eyes! Being heroic doesn't mean that you help "humans" and die! It means a lot of things! Humans aren't the only living creatures in this world; animals also exists! Steve Irwin protected wildlife and ensured that their extinction will not be possible. He did other heroic things which I bet YOU don't even know!
Besides, why do we call our fathers or mothers "our heroes"?

He was indeed a Hero to the animals! And certainly SOMEONE needs to put the animal's life forward before we kill them ALL. He did more to educate us about animals than just about anybody else ever has.

We need to stop being so self centered and start realizing that we a just a PART of the world, and that understanding and protecting the rest of the species is REALLY helping to save US too!

I'd have to consider him a hero in the area of conservation. He's done more to make people aware of wildlife and nature than anyone I can think of, and he did it with such passion and such a sense of fun that hopefully his message will never be forgotten. I'm sure he was a hero to his wife and children.

And why do you care if people call him a hero anyway? It's no skin off your butt one way or the other.

I think he's a good educator, but to call him a hero? I think that should be judged by each individual, some being effected by his work more than others. To some children he was their hero.

He was an animal conservationist, that was his job. He saved thousands of animals, including seals, penguins and others from being poached or killed.

He educated more people through his tv shows on Discovery and Animal Planet about the behavior of animals, where animals are found, and what is being done about endangered species animals.

Now what don't you understand?

I wouldn't really consider him a Hero. He just was an adventurous man that loved wrestling crocies and loved taking risk with different animals.
