Can smoking be good? Well, smoking makes you look cool and gives you something to do when you've got nobody to talk to at a party...
But as for preventing cancer - no. The body builds resistance to polio because polio is a virus and the body can generate white blood cells to fight viruses. It can't, however, generate anything to combat nicotine.
The only resistance the body builds up is in terms of the effects of tobacco - the headrush you got when sneaking a puff behind the bike sheds as a naughty teenager is long gone by the time you hit 40 and are smoking as many a day.

The immune system builds resistance to germs. Vaccines are made up of half killed germs of a particular disease like tetanus etc. When these weak germs enter our body by way of vaccine, the immune system will produce an army of antibodies that not only destroy these half killed germs but also are in readiness for any invasion by the germs of this particular disease thereby protecting us from the disease. Now nicotine is not a germ it is a habit forming chemical. Hence the only resistance we can produce is a strong will power.
Regardless of all I have said above, smoking can be Very Good…Yes, very good indeed for the manufactures, the sellers, the doctors, the dentists, the undertakers etc., etc.

Anti-Nicotine treatment is a course made of various therapies to help reduce your reliance on smoking and to help detox the body form previous smoking habits.
More and more people are becoming aware of the long-term benefits of giving up smoking. Although a high number of Spanish people still smoke, the influence of many British and other foreign residence in Andalucia and especially on the Costa del Sol are drawing attention to the health warnings. The awareness has spread to some clinics, usually in the Malaga region of the coast and especially in the Marbella area, which now offer anti-nicotine treatments.
Treatment will begin with a health check up, including blood pressure and lung function. The programme can last from 3 to 5 weeks. Therapies are likely to include oxygen therapy, special massage, and customized diet. An exercise schedule will also be suggested. For relaxation and to assist with the detox process, there is likely to be the option of sauna, Turkish baths and Jacuzzi. The course will conclude with a final health check up.
Smoking is a highly addictive habit. An anti-nicotine programme is specially designed to help re-educate your mind and body to free itself from the compulsion to smoke. This kind of treatment could be the step in the right direction that you need to take.

Hi there !
I think your basic concept about "immune system" need to be refreshed....
Though your concept about antibody formation (" specific proteins capable of defense") is correct, it is not FULLY correct.
The antibody formation occurs when the body is getting exposed to foreign particles (viruses , or bacteira) which are usually proteins ! These antibodies formed are specific in nature.and are also usually proteins.
"Nicotene" cannot be classified in the category where it may produce antibodies, which may help the body for the future defense.
The antibodies formed may be "helpful" or "harmful" !
Example..:- A diabetic patient on continuous insulin injections, may develop "antibodies against insulin ", which is not good for the patient.
So..ultimately it depends upon ..whether the foreign matter entering is "protein in nature" and also..if antibody formation is there .."is it helpful or harmful" ?
There are so many other factors too..which is beyond the scope of this column..
Also...though we can come out with
"un proved" theories of smoking being "good " , the "proved" harmful effects of smoking in the long run are just too ..too much...for taking the bargain !
So....morale of the story..."stop smoking..and that too...NOW..!"
Best wishes...
I

this is by far one of the most idiotic questions I've seen.
How can something that causes cancer BIG TIME, stop it?
It can't be true with smoking because it's NOT true... there's no vaccination for anti-tar or anti-nicotine.. the smoke is directly introduced to the body, and everything goops in the lungs.

Hello,
I have a story to tell you. It's about a wonderful man. A loving and caring father and grandfather. He'd been smoking all of his life. He was a great person. A good person... A kind person, who unfortunately had a bad habit... smoking. By his mid-50's, he was slowly getting sick, and it progressed rapidly. He quite smoking in his early 60's. He was, from the age of 66, connected to an oxygen tank and his mobilty critically reduced. He was in and out of hospital during those years. He couldn't even go in the shower by himself. Here was this loving man who was becoming incapacitated. He rarely moved from his lounge chair in the dining room, as his stength wouldn't allow him to. In the early 2004 he was hospitalised, by mid-year he was in rehab, and on 27th September 2004 he passed away in front of his wife and his eldest daughter.
His daughter still mourns. She was always there, when she wasn't working she was by his side and with her mother. His grandson was with her almost everyday too, to comfort her as she was distressed and emotional.
I am the grandson. and to this very day I mourn a great man. He achieved so much in his life.
My Grandfather was aged just 69 when his life ended, leaving his loving wife, 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. His life was drastically cut short due to smoking and his lungs breaking down. His lungs were only working at 18%. 18% ! using one word to answer you question "Can smoking be good?" NO.
Smoking is one of the worlds leading causes for disease and loss of life... preventable loss of life. If there is any good that can come from smoking, that's learning from our mistakes and banning it completely.
This is just one story of thousands around the world. My heart is still broken... i didn't know my Pop before he was sick. I'm 19. And my strongest memory... an image I will never forget, is my Grandfather on Christmas Day 2003. He could barely move. It was a hot Australian day, and he was so sick. I would glady have taken my life to save his. I loved him so much... I still do.

I don't think it's nicotine that's the main cancerogenis ingredient in tobacco smoke, there are loads of aromatic hydrocarbons, benz pyrenes and other nasty things there.
And its most certainly not healthy for almost every smoker, even if some escape all the predicted bad results of smoking.

Cigarette are chock full of nasty toxins. Exposing yourself to radiation does not make you build up a tolerance for cancer. Same applies here.
