Ok, im sure people will rip me for this but i am anti-ipod
they make you use thier software, which stinks, where most others just let you drag and drop all your music files directly from your folders. i guess if you aren't very tech savvy then itunes might seem like a better choice, or maybe not even then... just my opinion

To properly answer your question you need a dollar amount you would like to spend.

If you are going Hi-end i would go with something like this.. about $250

Best is subjective. Ipod is cool no doubt however depending on your needs, I personally use and swear by Creative Muvo it has so many features that I need most notably you can slide out the player and use as thumb drive, better than bringing a cable along no fuss at all, with built in mic I need it to take notes or record during my lectures, when you are tired of the songs recorded just simply used the in built radio, either for the latest news up date or just hear your favorite DJ on your favorite channel. just my two cents.

I like my iPod video. Instead of buying iTunes, i download songs and videos from LimeWire and convert them. Easy as that.
