Are you thinking that you might need the CD as evidence of ownership? I have about 350 CD's loaded onto my harddrive.I only have 40 or 50 hard copies in my CD collection.I buy, sell and give CD's away. I just think you are worried about an eventuality that is unlikely to take place. With so many millions of computers out there, enforcement of copywrite law is reserved for the true pirates, not the typical user.

No, according to the DRM you are not permitted to copy ANY digital media that has a copyright. This law was passed in 1998, and people are just now catching on to what it really entails.
After you have read the DRM and IF you understand it, then maybe you can get around it by recording the CD onto a Hard Drive, but, according to the DRM you can and most likely will be charged for every access after 7 times. That means you are allowed to listen to or watch a Digital Media Recording a set number of times, every time it is ACCESSED after that, you can and will be charged. Get ready america, the OS that we are mostly useing is about ready to charge a monthly fee for the Use of it,,,,,no you do NOT own that copy of windows that cost $149-$300. Microsoft owns it, you are just a User.

you should contact the seller and get another cd from him. what you are asking is more of a moral question. legally, they don't care if the cd is broken, they would want you to buy another one. morally, i think it is okay for you to make a copy of your friend's cd.

... legally, you should probably contact the seller and ask for another cd...

but, morally... it's a bit of a gray area... I'm not so sure I would feel guilty for burning my friends copy in that situation...

Very interesting question! I think it does-- now I'm not so sure that the authorities (whomever THEY are that enforce the copywrite laws!) would agree, but I think your chances of being called on the carpet are pretty slim indeed...

I don't think so. When push comes to shove. It is okay to buy and not okay to copy. A copyright infringement is a copyright infringement is a copyright infringement.

I would think so? I'd keep the broken one for evidance in case you get caught with the bootleg.
