Behind the safety of computers, people act like they wouldn't act in daily life. Is this anonymity a good thing or a negative thing?

In some ways its a good thing and in other ways its very negative. On a site like Yahoo Answers I think anonymity is good because all we are doing is asking/answering questions that we are too afraid to ask people in our daily lives. On the other hand child predators use certain sites to lure kids into meeting them and then it turns out badly.

I just think that we need to find a balance to make the internet our friend.

In the context of how you asked the question it is more negative than good. Because most people are fake to some degree when you meet them in life(unless they are drunk). And they usually want to be well received. So they will not make rude, nasty or racist remarks. But just has the most law abiding person might, if given a chance, go vandalizing and looting when in a bunch of people doing the same. because they are just part of the mob, the crowd. It is not like "Mel" bashed that car windshield in, or "Maggie" stole those dresses off the rack. It was a bunch of faceless, nameless people. And if everyone else is doing it, if you get detected it is not like it was just you. You can rationalize that you were no worse than the 240 others doing it. So, people can come here and act an *** like they could not do and would not do if they were in a live cocktail party, BBQ, or mixer.

Negative. Except for this site, because it was set up so well. Every site I have been on besides this one is filled with disgusting pictures and behavoir. Here is something many people don't know... People think they are safe from being detected, but in reality they may not be. You can go on to Google Desktop (not regular Google) and type in "sex" in the search bar and you will see every single site that your spouse/child/roommate has visited on your computer since the computer was purchased that is any way related to sex, including a snapshot of the first page of any email that was written with sex and sex related words in it...with the "To" and "From" logins right there! And deleting your cookies and erasing your history does NOT hide these! Cheaters disgust me, so I hope you all check this out and many cheaters get caught! I know there are other things built in so that the police or others who know how to do it can find out even more. I never say anything online that I would not say to someone's face!

Both. As others have said this site is great. It allows for people to ask those questions they would otherwise be afraid to ask. Unfortunately for all the sickos in the world it is a very bad thing. One of the main things that comes to mind is the sick world of child pornography and pedophilia. It sickens me what these guys are doing. Yes, I used guys as a generalization since there are statistically more men using these sites than women.

Both.

For bona fide people is good,
For hackers is excellent

Then, this may cause a problem and become a bad thing.
