Eat to increase your calorie intake:
1. Dried fruit (concentrated carbohydrates) -- put it on your cereal but also eat it for snacks
2. Drink a glass of real fruit juice with EVERY meal (a huge amount of calories)
3. Lots of pasta
4. Lots of peanut butter and peanuts (if you are not allergic)

Get a gym membership and start lifting weights, don't worry if other guys in the gym seem really big, everyone in their at one point in their life had a first day in the gym when they felt intimidated by the huge guys.
Only measure yourself against yourself: challenge yourself in each workout and the following week try and do just a little bit more, one more rep or 5 more pounds.
For advice on a good book on the subject or on how to put together a program see my other answers.
Grandmom is right, the protein shakes will support the weightlifting.
One thing about EVEB's advice: NO TOFU, try and stay away from soy and soy protein in general as it has a mildly estrogenic effect and what you want your body to be producing is testosterone.

Eat properly, don't eat too many fats and fast food.
You will gain weight if you do eat them, but it will be ugly fat and you will feel even less confident. Potein drinks etc. available at local health food store is fine, but they are aimed at body building, so you will be better off if you start a weight lifing program and exercise regularly. But don't go for the bulky/muscle bound look. Go for a attractive natural look. Being tall you can carry the extra weight and build long muscles. If you were to over build, then you will find your self less confident and be right back where you are now, but from the opposite effect.
As you gain weight and muscle you will find that you will lose your fear and gain more confidence.

To gain muscle you need to lift heavy weights three times a week. Lift a weight that you can only lift 3 times. Do three sets.
To gain confidence, Kick box. Hitting others and getting hit will increase you confidence. Don't worry about being mean, It's nothing personal in a gym.

Eat plenty of proteins- fish, chicken, etc. to build muscles. If your vegetarian try tofu, brocolli and peanut butter. If you want to gain weight, try plenty of carbs and fat. If you want to use your body to increase confidence, lift weights and tone your muscles. Eat well, lift weights, you will definately see a boost in confidence.
