You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

Go to RUN in your START menu and type MSCONFIG. Then go to the STARTUP section and UNCHECK many of the unneeded applications. But keep your anti-virus checked.

You might need more RAM. IF you have less than 512MB, then check your computer at http://www.coastmemory.com

Also, use DISK CLEANUP and DEFRAG. Find these in the programs section. Open Accessories and find them in the System Tools section.

3 things that will speed up your computer. One is memory. Think of your processor as water and your programs as fires. YOu want to put out the fires but the memory can only carry so much water. if you have a bigger bucket, you can carry more water and put out the fires sooner. If you have 512 K then up your memmory to 1 gig or even 2 gig if you can. Your computer won't be 2x as fast or 3x as fast, but exponentially faster.
Power in an underrated concern. Most computers come with a power supply of like 250w or 300w. Up your power to 500 w and see the difference. All or your bios need power and they can drain on each other if there isn't enough to go around. They may be running at less than optimum speed without the correct amount of power.
Lastly, your board's bus speed is important. The cheaper models have a low bus speed 100mhz, but if you can get a 133 or higher bus speed, then your computer will once again more faster.
Memmory is the quickest fix and easiest to install, just wear rubber gloves when inserting the chips. Chips should be installed in like pairs.

Here's a list of 'tweaks' I have put together (for Windows XP)

First right-click My Computer and go to:
Properties>Advanced>Performance>Settings
Select radio button for best performance
This will take away the blue and green look to XP and give it the old grey windows look but it highly reduces the demand on your video card.
Next, from the same window in Properties>Advanced>Performance>Settings, the new window open should say performance options.
Click the advanced tab and then click change under vitrual memory. Windows adjusts the size of the page file as needed but it has a limit on min and max size. choose a custom size and make both of them the max size. You can make it larger than it was if you like. If it was 1500 MB min and 3000 MB max, it is o.k. to make both 4000 MB as long as your system has plenty of hard drive space. This tweak will keep windows from slowing down while it tries to adjust the size of the page file.
Click O.K. on all windows and the changes will take effect after the next restart. If you have more than one hard drive I recommend using no page file on your C; drive and put one on the other drive instead. This will make it even faster for your system to access. However, if you just have one physical hard drive that is partitioned, then don’t bother.

Next run "services.msc" from the run box in the start menu.
Double-click and disable the following at your discretion:
Error reporting- does nothing for you, just helps Micro$oft
indexing service- on the rare occasion that you are using the search function, it will make it a little faster, the rest of the time it is constantly indexing your system and slowing it down
Themes- you know what they are, keep 'em if ya want 'em
Help and support- the "browser" that pops up when you hit F1 key
there are plenty more in there that are unnecessary and slowing down your system, but these are the ones that are completely safe for everyone to disable. The rest depend on the user and their particular system.

Also in the Properties menu for My Computer:
on the system restore tab- you can disable this feature to speed up your system but the windows system restore feature will not be available. When you really need to use it, it hardly ever works. Most of the time you will get half way through the restore and an error pops up telling you that your system can not be restored to that date/time.
It’s up to you, but just make sure you have anti-virus running and regularly back up your system. When its time to do a restore your better off doing it the old fashion way with the CD.

Run MSCONFIG from the run box. Uncheck anything that you are ABSOLUTLY sure does not need to be running every time your system restarts.
for the rest, if I don’t know, I usually Google the file name with the *.exe and get a good idea if it needs to be running.

First thing, make sure that you have no spyware.
download and run this..
http://www.download.com/3405-8022-5153545.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
Also make sure your system is free of viruses.
Here is a link to a very good, FREE antivirus..
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5

Next off, make sure there are not too many programs running on windows boot that aren't necessary.
check out the system tray (by the clock) and double click each program icon, check the settings for each and decide if this is something you want to automatically run on each system boot (you should be able to change this within each programs settings or options menu).
Last but not least, defragment your drive.
click Start/ all programs/ accessories/ system tools, you should find the disk defragmenter.
Run that every week or so.

Hope this helps.

I am no computer expert but this is what I know that can help.Clean your computer, delete any folders or pictures that take up too much space. Go to control panel on your computer and click on add or remove. Make sure you know what you are removing if your not sure leave it alone. Maybe you need to update your computer. Call your computer company if its Dell, Toshiba, Compaq etc. and their professional tech can take you step by step. I think you should call if you don't know what your doing.

Do your maintenance with disk clean and defrag. Have at least gig of memory. Keep all unnecessary programs deleted. That is about it, unless you get a faster CPU with a new computer.
