A fruit dealer sold the large papayas at 12.00 pesoeach and the smaller ones at 5.50 each. If she earned 940 pesos from 100 papayas, how many of these papayas are large and how many are smaller in size?

Okay...

x=Large y=small

12x + 5.5y = 940 and x + y = 100

y = 100 - x

12x + 5.5y = 940
12x + 5.5(100-x) = 940
12x + 550 - 5.5x = 940
6.5x = 390
x = 60

y = 100 - x
y = 100 - 60
y = 40

Therefore there are 60 large and 40 small.

To check:
60 x 12 = 720
40 x 5.5 = 220
then add 720 + 220 = 940 pesos!!!

Let no. of large papayas = X
Let no. of small papayas = Y
12X + 5.5Y =940-------------(1)
But X + Y = 100
X = 100 - Y-----------(2)

Put the value of X in (1)
12(100 - Y) + 5.5Y = 940
1200 - 12Y + 5.5Y = 940
6.5Y = 1200 - 940 = 260
Y = 260/6.5 = 40
Now keep the value of Y in (2)
X = 100 - 40 = 60
So large Papayas are 60 and small ones are 40.

Verify:
60*12 + 40*5.5 = 940

Set up two equations, one for the money made and one for the amount she sold.
Amount sold:
s + l = 100
amount of small papayas is the s, and the amount of large papayas is the l

Money made:
5.5s + 12l = 940
each small one was sold at 5.50 and each large one was sold at 12.

Now use the two equations and either substitute or eliminate to solve for s and l.

Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Let X be small papaya
Let Y be big papaya

eqn1 X+Y=100
eqn2 5.50X+12Y=940

times eqn1 by 5.5 you will get

eqn1 5.5X+5.5Y=550
eqn2 5.50X+12Y=940

eqn1-eqn2 you will get

6.5Y=390
Y=60

Since Y=60, X=40

Prove: 60(12)+40(5.5)=940peso!!!!!

if you make this into simultaneous equations:

5.5x + 12y = 940
x + y = 100

where x is small n y is big

solve to get

y = 52 therefore large
x = 48 therefore small
