Only as a stop gap measure, we should be doing a full court press to convert to solar, first you can't get any cleaner a source of power,
no waste, no polution. Second, solar eliminates an reliance on unstable oil supplys and is inexhaustable. Third a decentralized power structure eliminates a terrorist target, unlike nuke plants which we know the terrorists would like to hit, or transmission towers, if everyone is making their own power the only thing the terrorists could do is blow up the sun. We need to switch, for our environment, economy and security.

Perhaps you should check on the toxic chemicals that are used to create solar cells, also please note that the efficiency of a solar cell will max out at 25% or so. Even assuming 100%, the amount of land needed is ridiculous, only so much of the suns energy reaches the earth. The world will need a mix of nuclear, renewables, and fossil fuel. Reprocessing of fuel for nuclear plants will also be necessary.
