I have a male betta fish and he seems to know when I am in the rom and close by . His behaviour changes when I am within a few feet of his tank. Can fish see very well?

A Betta has monocular vision, which means that it can see in two directions at the same time. Overall, the Betta's eyesight is somewhat poor. To detect vibrations and get an overall feel for its surrounding, Bettas use a "lateral line," which runs down their sides.

Eyesight varies with each fish, but a bettas vision is poor. Mine are in a heavily planted tank and they lose sight of each other constantly (which is a good thing. Having said that, you are a bit hard to miss.

They have poor vision of things out of the water, they can see you. My male betta will often beg for food whem walk by. They swim rapidly back and forth when I walk by. In my community tank the entire tank (other than the bottom feeders) crowds into the feeding corner when I walk by.

Yes they can as a fisherman of many years the different colors of bait some times you just have to scratch the eyeball off a lead head jig to make a big difference.

fish have poor vision, but exellent sense of motion, they detect the movement in the room, and keen sense of smell, but not you from inside the tank.

it is not that he can see well, its that he knows who you are. fish know whom there masters are. fish are like cats or dogs when you walk into a room he swims around because he is happy to see you. i know all this because i work at a fish store :)
