You may be thinking of asteroid 99942 Apophis (originally called 2004 MN4) which passed close to Earth in 2004 and will return for another close pass in 2029. However, there are so many asteroids that we get a close pass by one of them quite often, so I can't say for sure that Apophis is the one you want to know about.

The next asteroid to approach Earth is 2006 QJ65. Tomorrow (September 30, 2006) it will be within 4.8-million miles of Earth. QJ65 is some 100 meters in diameter.
See this website for a complete and updated daily listing of asteroid/comet approaches ==> http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/

a million. this isn't a comet; it really is an asteroid. 2. it really is an fairly small, very dim body, so only isn't seen with the bare eye. it is going to require a somewhat large telescope, a minimum of 10 inches aperture, and intensely some ability on the component of the operator to locate this tiny shifting aspect between the tens of millions of similar unmoving factors, the celebs. 3. I have said various close to Earth asteroids contained in the previous, and seeing them required a huge telescope, very special and as a lot as this aspect charts, and many years of experience in searching and monitoring small dim gadgets. till you're an experienced newbie astronomer, your possibilities of seeing it are practically 0.
