I am trying to choose between a bachelors degree in Journalism or a bachelors degree in Professional Writing. The Journalism degree offers a lot of journalism courses and the Professional writing degree offers a lot of writing courses.

They are very similar. Journalists generally write for the public (newspapers, magazines, websites, etc.) Professional writers can write for any kind of business, but normally must have a specific topic to write about. Journalism is more general in that you learn how to write for the public. Professional writing is more private because you'd likely be doing it about a specific subject and/or for a specific industry.

A journalist works for a newpaper, radio, TV company and writes all kinds of stories about various different things, they travel to find out about new stories. A professional writer stays in one place and writes about one specific topic from information provided to him/her by the developer of the product. They can also write descriptive advertising and other writing such as in professional journals. In some cases a writer might be a journalist and vice versa but the majority of Journalists feel the need to investigate things and a Professional writer is more concerned with precise usage of words.

Academic writings are required to submit for academic degrees and technical writings are required to submit for professional matters.
